Estrogen are steroid hormones that regulate the development and functioning of female sex organs including the development of ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, breasts and the regulation of menstrual cycle. It plays a key role in the proper functioning of female reproductive health. Abnormal levels of estrogen may also found in men, in case of improper functioning of the adrenal glands. In both the sexes, they help in growth and bone metabolism. The estrogen test measures the levels of estrogen hormone in the blood.

In boys and men, estrogen testing is helpful in detecting estrogen excess and helpful in diagnosing delayed puberty and the cause for enlarged breasts. The test may also be ordered to detect estrogen-producing tumours.
